What We Can Achieve Together:
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is engaging with industry, government, and local partners to advance the application of electronic monitoring to improve fisheries transparency and enhance ecological and socioeconomic resilience across industrial fisheries. The Large Scale Fisheries Manager, Western and Central Pacific Ocean (LSF Pacific Manager) supports the development and the implementation of TNC’s global industrial fisheries strategy within the Western and Central Pacific Region, with a particular focus on Micronesia and Polynesia. Working in close collaboration with TNC country and global programs and colleagues, he/she may drive and contribute to strategy design, coordinate regional implementation, and facilitate adaptive management. The LSF Pacific Manager will support country programs in national policy dialogues, may represent TNC in Regional Fishery Management Organization meetings and other regional forums, and engage in industry roundtables. The Manager will report to the Conservation Policy Director for Micronesia and Polynesia, with a dotted line into the global Large Scale Fisheries strategy Manager.

We’re Looking for You:
The LSF Pacific Manager contributes to the development of The Nature Conservancy’s global large-scale fisheries strategy, and Managers the global strategy’s alignment and execution into the Western and Central Pacific Regional context.

The LSF Pacific Manager helps to cultivate and maintain the Conservancy as a major conservation partner for large-scale fishery improvements and Electronic Monitoring (EM) within the region, defining conservation priorities and long-term conservation strategies. The LSF Pacific Manager builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field and develops key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices. The LSF Pacific Manager is a key contributor in advancing the growing portfolio of projects in the Western and Central Pacific region, focused on fisheries transparency, seafood sustainability, policy, and corporate engagement. They may contribute to innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks that address the scaling of Electronic Monitoring and other technologies, as well as negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and industry partners. It will entail fundraising efforts in alignment with the regional and global teams.

This is a dynamic position that works across multiple TNC country programs, the global strategy team, and the business functions of operations, finance, communications, policy, and corporate engagement. The ideal candidate values collaboration, leverages systems thinking to identify strategic opportunities, and can manage multiple complex work streams.

The Large Scale Fisheries Manager position directly reports to the Micronesia Program Deputy Director and will also work closely with the Associate Director of TNC’s Large Scale Fisheries program. The position is full-time, fully remote, and is available in Australia, Indonesia (through our local partner), Solomon Islands, Guam, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, or the United States.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Designs, implements, and directs complex and diverse projects encompassing multiple programs.
  • Ability to apply analysis, experience, and context to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Works with staff from across the Micronesia and Polynesia, Asia-Pacific, and the Global organization.
  • Travels on short notice and work long and flexible hours as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% both domestically and internationally.
  • Provides strategic analysis in support of conservation agenda for a key strategy area
  • Provides economic analysis of conservation opportunities
  • Managers and/or manages team or project to support and improve conservation efforts.
  • Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.
  • Builds cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals

What You’ll Bring
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in fisheries management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience engaging across and/or working within fishery departments, industry partners, and other stakeholders to achieve a common objective.
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, Managering, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Familiarity with electronic monitoring and its application within fisheries management.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, industry groups, and/or government agencies.
  • Experience negotiating.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in fisheries management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing fisheries management policy and plans.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in industrial fisheries within the Micronesia and Polynesia Region, and familiarity on how these trends and practices connect into global trends.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
  • Politically savvy.
