Summary of Duties
The Assistant Professor in Geospatial Science will lead and advance geospatial science teaching, research, and capacity-building at SINU. The position will play a key role in implementing the ACIAR-funded project “Plannim Fiuja for Yumi – Co-planning Risk-informed and Equitable Livelihood Futures with Small-scale Fishing Communities” (FIS/2023/122) and establishing a new Bachelor of Geospatial Science program.

The role includes curriculum design, research leadership, stakeholder engagement, and national geospatial development supportaligned with SINU’s strategic goals and the Solomon Islands’ sustainable development priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead geospatial research and support the ACIAR project “Plannim Fiuja for Yumi”.
  • Develop and coordinate the Bachelor of Geospatial Science program.
  • Deliver teaching in GIS, Remote Sensing, Cartography, and Spatial Analysis.
  • Supervise student research and project work.
  • Conduct training and build geospatial capacity across SINU.
  • Collaborate with government ministries, NGOs, regional universities, and donor partners.
  • Represent SINU in national and regional geospatial forums.

Qualifications & Experience
Mandatory

  • PhD in Geospatial Science, GIS, Remote Sensing, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in tertiary teaching and curriculum development.
  • Proven research record with publications.
  • Strong skills in GIS and remote sensing software (ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, etc.).
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders across sectors.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring abilities.

Desirable

  • Experience working in Pacific or Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
  • Knowledge of indigenous land-use and resource management systems.
  • Familiarity with geospatial data standards, policy, and development planning.
  • Experience with donor-funded or government-led projects.

  • Successful development and launch of the Bachelor of Geospatial Science program.
  • Delivery of high-quality research outputs aligned with SINU and ACIAR priorities.
  • Effective teaching, supervision, and student support.
  • Strengthened geospatial capacity within SINU.
  • Productive partnerships with national and regional stakeholders.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Annual Salary: $234,681.49-$286,459.42
  • Annual Leave Entitlement:20 Working days
  • Annual Gratuity: 15% of Annual Basic Salary
  • Housing : 15% housing allowance of basic salary or rental entitlements under the University Policy.
  • Other Terms and Conditions of Service relevant to this position: As per Contract and SINU Policy.

Terms and Conditions
This is a full-time position with a contract term of five years, renewable based on performance and mutual agreement.
